Does My Child’s Car Insurance Change If He Is Going Away To College?
Do you have a child that is going away to college? If so, there are many things that will change when it comes to your car insurance. Below are just a few different scenarios that will change your child’s car insurance if he goes away to college.
Going Away For College Without the Car
If your child moves away for college but does not take the car with him the car insurance policy will change. Many auto insurance companies offer a student away rate which allows your child to be under your policy if the car does not go with him. This is a great thing if you have a child who does not have a car on campus, but comes home and uses his car. It will also lower your car insurance rate since your child is not constantly using the car.
Taking the Car With Him to College Will Change Your Child’s Car Insurance
If your child is going to college and needs a car there, then you also need to contact your auto insurance company. The car will be at a different address than what the policy is under, therefore you may see your rates increase or decrease depending on many factors including the location.
Moving Away from the House For Good
If your child is permanently making a move when he goes to college and is no longer under your roof then you can take him off the policy completely. This will make your rates drop drastically, however your child will have to get his car insured under his own name. Depending on what scenario your child falls under will help determine whether or not his car insurance changes when he goes away for college.
