Does My Car Insurance Cover Items Stolen From My Car?

Many people believe that because they have car insurance anything in the car is covered. Unfortunately, this is not the case. This article will give you an idea of what is and isn’t covered when it is stolen from your car.

Items Not Covered

If you have items in your car that are moveable, then they are most likely not covered. For example, if you have your GPS in the car and it is stolen, your car insurance company will not cover it. However, your homeowners insurance may. You may be able to add these items to your policy and pay an extra fee, but you would have to contact your car insurance company first to see if they allow that.

Items Covered

There are some items in your car that would be covered if they were stolen. These items include pieces of your car, such as your CD player as long as it wasn’t modified and came standard with the car. However, if you made modifications to your car and added a sound system or something of that sort, this would not be covered unless you added it to your policy. Again, you will have to contact your car insurance company to see what items are covered under your policy. If you have a valuable system or something that you keep in your car on a regular basis, such as a wheelchair, you may be able to add it to your policy. This would have you covered in case it was stolen.

Keep Track of Your Items

Many of us keep very valuable items in our cars. You should always be prepared in case these items are stolen. Do not just assume that these items will be replaced by your insurance company. Keep your doors locked, and keep receipts in case of a theft. This will keep you prepared for unfortunate events.
