Older cars (but not antiques) and sedans are almost always cheaper to insure. Sports cars, trucks and motorcycles are much more expensive to insure. The amount of coverage you request will determine the price of the auto insurance. First time drivers can get cheap auto insurance by choosing state liability limits only. Most states require a driver to have full coverage if there is a lien or loan against the vehicle. If there is no lien, liability insurance only is a much cheaper way to go. Also, raising a deductible to a higher amount will lower the rate, too. The limits of what an insurance company pays, plus any medical payments also factor in to the overall cost of the insurance premium.
Family plans and shared policies
First time drivers can benefit from lower rates by going on their parents’ policy, or a family plan. Auto insurance companies offer multi-car, multi-driver and multi-policy discounts in most cases. The more drivers, cars and types of policies on one plan, the bigger the discount. Also, on a family plan, a first time driver may not have to pay down payments.
First time drivers certainly can get cheap auto insurance. They just have to do a little research and shop around. Not just from company to company, but car to car and family plan or individual plan. There are several things to consider, but well worth the time to do so.
