Are There Options If I Can Not Afford Car Insurance?

In almost all areas of the country, driving legally will require you to get car insurance. Unfortunately, car insurance can be quite expensive and unaffordable for many people. Luckily, if you cannot afford to pay for an expensive car insurance policy, you do have some options.

Get the Bare Minimum

The first option you have if you can not afford car insurance is to just get the bare minimum coverage. Depending on the state you live in, the bare minimum coverage may be just some simple liability coverage. This level of coverage is very affordable when compared to high levels of coverage which include collision or comprehensive coverage. However, in the event your car is damaged or stolen, you may have to pay for repairs or replacement out of pocket.

Borrow or Rent When Needed

The second option you have if you can not afford car insurance is to borrow or rent a car when it is needed, as opposed to owning your own car. If you drive a rental car, you can get a temporary policy for about $15 per day. If you borrow a friends car, you may be able to get away without paying for any temporary insurance.

Seek Employer Assistance

The third option you have if you can not afford car insurance is to seek employer assistance. If you have to drive your car for work, your employer may be willing to cover or pay for a share of your insurance costs. If driving is required for your job and your employer will not reimburse you for your insurance costs, you may be able to deduct the expense on your taxes.
