It is legal alright, for you to drive that sports car. After all, you have a driver’s license. But did you know that there are driving schools specifically for performance driving?  This is not the driving school you attended for the first time.  The driving education you will get from these schools will make you licensed to drive along race tracks and off public roads, learning the fundamentals of racing and performance driving. Depending on the appropriate sanctioning body, finishing lessons in any of these schools will reward you a race license!

Proper vehicle control is a key element among the courses in these performance and racing schools, with subjects ranging from instructions on how to accelerate, brake and steer. Auto experts even say that attending these schools makes you realize how much driving habits you've been using for years are actually wrong, which you thought were the right way to drive.  Enrolment in these courses however is not for money-pinching, and you cannot apply for student loans on these ones!

Calgary, Alberta, and Toronto, Ontario are known for Racing Adventures, a driving school that gives students plenty of track time. Enrolling here will set you back between $1,000 to $4,700.

In Andover, England, Thruxton Motorsport Centre, a former World War II airfield has hosted motorsports since 1950.  Fees can be as low as $250, called the Taster Experiences where you can drive a few laps in a Ferrari. Then there is the $850 Ultimate Supercar Experience which allows you to do multiple laps with a Mercedes SLK, Porsche 911 Turbo, Ferrari F430, and Lamborghini Murcielago.

Nice, France is not only a very appealing destination to visit. It is also known for its Racing Adventures.  Paying $875 avails you 15 laps in a Formula 3 car, followed by a ride-along in an F1 with an instructor. If you can splurge more, $2,800 grants you 15 laps piloting an F3 car, coupled with three laps driving a modern F1 racer.

Pontypool, Ontario’s Bridgestone Racing Academy is a subsidiary of the tire manufacturer Bridgestone. Toronto’s next-door neighbor, the school has an impeccable record of 21 injury-free years, value for the money, expert instruction, and healthy doses of track time. Half-day, Thrill of a Lifetime programs are pegged at around $600; the three-day Wheel-to-Wheel course is offered for $4,200.  Then, if you have the time and the money, you can splurge $12,800 to drive their nine-race F2000 series over three weekends!

If karting is what makes you tick, try the following kart driving schools,

Also in Thruxton Motorsport Centre in Andover, England is a premier venue for kart driving. You may avail of their $50 Arrive and Drive offer. But if karting longer is what you prefer, then try their single-day solo and team races which will set you back to about $100 per person.

In Manchester, England is where you can find the Aintree Racing Driver's School Ltd. which use the types of karts on which some of the world's best race car drivers learned their trade. Courses are offered single days costing from about $100 to $450 for the marathon.

Jump to Northamptonshire, England for the Silverstone Rally School and feel how its like to kart in a World Rally Championship (WRC). Take one of two courses and you can drive like a pro: either take the the half-day introductory, priced around $315, or the full-day Clubmans for $550 or so.

Go closer home at Cabo San Lucas and Ensanada, Mexico for the Wide Open Baja Off-Road Adventures. Mexico's Baja Peninsula has been home to some of the world's most grueling races. The Basic Test Drive buys you lessons and a few laps for $300. If you can stay for a week and is ready to burn $8,100, there's always the Baja Peninsula Tour.
