Security Solutions for your Car

While some say a fool-proof way to secure your car is to own one not worth stealing, not all want an old, if not dilapidated, car.  The good news is that there are security solutions ranging from the hi-tech ones to the low-tech versions, from expensive to practical options that depend on your need and what you can afford.

CAR ALARMS.  Consisting of numerous electronic sensors, car alarms are made to react to a breach in a vehicle. Vehicle breaches may include unauthorized entry, breaking of glass, sudden movement, and perimeter violations. As the car alarm detects a threat, it breaks into a siren operating at over 120 dBs to alert the car driver, and concerned citizens in the area.  However, older car alarms are sensitive even to accidental bumping. They give off alarms that turn out to be false, making your neighborhood unable to differentiate the whether the “bad wolf” really has arrived. Technology upgrades are trying to work on these sensitivity problems of older car alarm models.  Using multistage electronics, current car alarm systems have the capacity to differentiate between gentle, accidental bumps and serious breaches.

MECHANICAL IMMOBILIZERS.  These security gadgets are better known as door and ignition locks. Since mechanical immobilizers are easily seen, amateur car thieves can be discouraged when they see one on your car. However, professional thieves do have the capacity to crash into the mechanical immobilizer. It is advisable therefore, to use this security gadget for your car, in tandem with another security system.

ELECTRONIC IMMOBILIZERS. Most modern vehicles are equipped with car keys that have integrated electronic immobilizers. Built-in transponders or microchips that send signals to the ignition and fuel-pump systems of the vehicle are embedded in the car keys. Should there be a breach in the car, the car will refuse to start because it only recognizes the signal from your key. Heightened vehicle security for all existing modern cars is also provided by ignition killers that get their instructions from a wireless transmitter.

VEHICLE TRACKING.  And then there’s the security device that tracks your vehicle’s location even if thieves managed to cart it away. One involves an inexpensive process of  'VIN etching' (vehicle identification number) where a vehicle's identification code is etched onto its windshield, side glass and rear window. It is both an effective tracking device and deterrent.  Generally, car thieves avoid etched vehicles because it is more costly for them to replace and dispose of VIN-coded glass.  And then another tracking technique is the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) often sold with service contracts. . You may be surprised but VIN etching only costs around $24.95 while GPS will set you back by $169.99 to $360.00.

If you invest in security systems for your cars, you have a higher chance of not needing to replace your car, and of avoiding falling into the emotional rollercoaster of losing something you value.  On top of that, auto insurance companies offer discounts as well if your vehicle is security-proof.  Choose the security system that fits your budget and your need.
