Car insurance is one of our most unavoidable expenses so we must all strive to get the most affordable auto insurance if possible.  We all know that common factors that affect the prices are age, sex, car type and driving record but auto insurance agents also reveal some other factors that they consider and why.

Insurance companies are now checking credit because people with poor credit are statistically more like to file more claims. People who have a bad credit record are more apt to file a claim instead of settling it themselves because they don’t have the means to handle it any other way. Insurance relies highly on numbers so when statistics suggest that people with bad credit have a higher probability of claims.

Insurance agents suggest that we shop around and get as many auto insurance quotes as possible so we can compare. Not all companies put so much value on our credit score so even if you have a good record it may not always mean lower auto insurance premiums. Therefore, as a consumer, it is our job to shop around and find the best insurers that fits our needs.

Another point we should remember is that red cars do not always equate skyrocketing bills! Color has absolutely nothing to do with getting cheap car insurance, as this is not a factor that companies consider. The red car theory is a complete falsehood. What may be considered is your driving record rather than the color of your car.

We should also stay out of accidents and tickets—not only will it save our time but also our money. Some companies will drop you if you have had too much tickets and accidents, as you will then be considered a high risk. Hitting a deer one too many times or being rear-ended on more than one occasion, can also affect your car insurance rate despite the fact that these incidents may be out of your control. Agents are aware that this may not be fair but even if there’s no exact reason why some people get into more accidents than other, the fact is their claims cause companies to lose money. Knowing this, it is very tempting to lie to your auto insurance agent about your record but this one thing that we should avoid! They can easily look up our driving records on their computer and watch it print.

Chances are, most of us live in a state where car insurance is mandatory. By keeping your credit score in check (or at least working to improve it) would greatly increase our chances of getting cheap auto insurance. Shopping around for a car insurance company that fits your needs will also help, as well as avoiding mishaps and accidents, you'll be able to keep the cost of your car insurance down. Also make sure to know what your current car insurance policy covers. You may have coverage that you don't need so adjust your coverage to get the car insurance that you need, with the price that matches your budget.
