The recession has led many consumers to seek out the lowest price possible for many services. This includes car insurance. Although, in some cases this may be ok it is important to shop around and get answers that satisfy you and offer you the best service and coverage.

When calling an insurance company to receive a quote or answers to your questions be sure to ask as many as necessary to make you feel comfortable. Be sure you get a knowledgeable representative. It is important to understand that insurance minimums vary from State to State and you must have at least this coverage. Reps at insurance companies should have this information at the ready and be able to answer all of your questions.

When switching insurance be sure you have coverage that will meet or exceed your needs in an accident. Although you may be able to lower your payment by dropping certain non-required coverage this may impact you greatly if an auto accident occurs. Saving a few bucks a month may cost you a lot if you are involved in a crash. If you only take out minimum coverage, your company will cover that amount but if the damages are more and you have caused the accident or the other motorist is uninsured then you are required to pay for the rest out of pocket.

It is better to take out more insurance on bodily injury coverage and physical property coverage. One way to save is by possibly having a higher deductible. It may mean covering the first $1000 to $1500 worth of damage to your vehicle but it will save you money on your premium.

Some companies offer discounts for good driving records and safe drivers.   It may require you to take a course in safe driving. They may also offer a discount for teens with good grades. Maintaining a clean record with no tickets can lower your premium as well. They may also offer discounts for multiple policies. This may include additional vehicles or additional items such as life or homeowners insurance. Check with these companies.

There are various ways to save. Possibly ask for a higher deductible if you are able to afford to pay this out of pocket expense. Ask for discounts, if you don’t ask you won’t know. If you have a car with low value, typically $1000 or less it is possible to drop collision or comprehensive insurance. The claim would probably be valued less than your annual premium or amount required to pay out of pocket. Be sure to shop several companies before making your decision. Policies can vary greatly in dollar amount. Be sure to inquire about the minimum coverage required by your State and what would best fit your needs.
