Insurance industry spokeswoman Heather Ryndak reminds drivers to buckle up, always drive defensively, observe the rules of the road, and be very courteous behind the wheel.

””Ryndak advises motorists to apply various “steps to prevent distractions during driving that could affect their driving performance.” On top of the list is “don’t drink and drive.”  According to Ryndak “One-third of all auto accidents are cause by  drunken driving.”

Some points for motorists to minimize distractions is by pulling over to a safe place to:
          • Call using cell phones
          • Pick up items in the floormats
          • Switch radio stations
          • Change audio CDs
          • Browse a newspaper or look on a map
          • Eat or do  personal grooming

It is also advised that motorists avoid aggressive driving.  If you are in a potentially dangerous situation, better not to escalate it by avoiding gesturing angrily at a motorist who has probably cut you off on the freeway.  If the matters further escalate, it is always wiser to call the police than take matters on your own hands. 

It is also important to exercise courtesy when you are driving to avoid furher problems on the roadways.  If you are already in an accident, pull over on the road, exit your vehicle from the highway then discuss insurance information of that safety railings, and not in the middle of the road.

  6.  Leave a safe distance between your cars and others.  At least one car length space between your car and the vehicle ahead is safe enough.
  7. Minimize distractions like reading the newspaper or checking out or answering your cellphone while driving. 
  8. Always maintain a constant speed whenever possible. Don’t always slow down or speed up.
  9. Be very careful on intersections. Most accidents happen on intersections. If you are about to enter an intersection, be sure to look left, then right, then left again to make sure that the area is clear.
  10. Be very aware of road conditions. Always keep your lights on at dusk, dawn and during heavy rains. It is helpful also if you know basic vehicle dynamics, such as recovering from a skid.
