Proper Insurance Coverage for your Trailer
By: coppeneurPerhaps you wanted to know if attaching a trailer behind your car would mean additional insurance policy. Not many of us are aware that your existing auto insurance coverage, specifically our liability insurance coverage is enough to get you on the road. In case anyone or anything was damaged due to your trailer while it was in transit, your auto insurance’s liability coverage would be able to pay the damages.
Let’s take another case. Say, your trailer, for some reason, started rolling while it was parked in your driveway, you may claim from your standard home insurance to cover any resulting damage or injury. This varies by policy to policy so better check with your provider, though.
If you want to protect your trailer from being stolen or vandalized, check first if you already have this coverage on your home insurance policy. Property insurance can be very different from company to company. If coverage doesn’t apply to your trailer, then by all means you can purchase additional insurance.
Trailer insurance can be an add on to your current auto insurance policy or your home insurance policy, or it can be a stand alone insurance and you can apply for an RV and trailer insurance policy. The cost of your trailer insurance will depend on its make, type and value.
If it is the load of your trailer that you want to insure, you need to apply for an insurance for it. Your add-on insurance will only cover for collision and theft of the trailer, but will not include protection of the contents in your unit.
If you are using a trailer recreationally, and you want coverage for items inside the trailer as well as collision and comprehensive insurance, you should purchase coverage as part of your property insurance policy. However, if the trailer is used as a permanent home, this type of insurance normally doesn’t apply.
An RV and trailer insurance policy is what you need if you want to insure your RV or Fifth-wheel vacation trailer. With this type of policy, you can customize your coverage based on the replacement value of your unit.
Enjoy the summer with your trailer out again from the storage, or newly-bought from your favourite outlet. But before you attach that trailer into your car, be sure that you are aware of the many types of coverage you may have or that you may need to buy in addition to what you have.
