Shopping for Auto Insurance in California: Tips

When shopping for car insurance in California, try to remember these tips to help decrease the overall premium cost.

  • Inquire about discounts. These include things like multi-car, airbags, and anti-theft devices. Then, ask about possible surcharges. This is because not all companies offer the same type of plans nor have the same underwriting rules. If you don't want to be shocked when your bill arrives, you have to do this first step thoroughly.

  • Then, find out the length of the policy term. There are three different lenghts--one month, six months/semi-annual, and one year/annual. This varies from one insurance company to the next so make sure you find out.

  • Most companies offer installment plans if you wish to pay the premium over a period of time instead of all at once. However, this entails an extra cost (service fee), and while it might seem easier on the pocket to pay for your policy in small monthly bites, the total cost will be much larger. Furthermore, if you decide to cancel the policy, the insurance company will remit all return premiums to the finance company, who will in turn apply them on your account. Keep this in mind before deciding whether to pay the full price at once or at monthly installments.

  • Some companies charge policy issuance fees. These are usually returned once the policy is issued, but are not returned when the policy is cancelled.

  • You might want to ask about higher deductibles, which can lower your costs but you will have to pay for it up front if you file a claim against your insurance policy.

  • You might also want to consider foregoing comprehensive or collision coverage for older cars, since any claim you make would not go that far beyond the premium cost and the deductible amounts.

  • If you choose a broker, ask about the fees and pay them in advance. Generally however, if the policy is cancelled brokers' fees are non-refundable.

  • Review your policy's territorial provisions, especially with regards to driving in Canada and Mexico. In most cases, Mexico does not recognize insurances issued in California (i.e. if you meet an accident in Mexico you are subject to Mexican laws). Although, some policies might cover this as well.
